Hypothetically, if they came out with one tomorrow, would you jump on it, or wait a year or so for the bugs to shake out?

Not speaking for anyone but myself.... Usually, I would say you probably can't go wrong with either, but your situation is a little different... When I did my research late last year, those two detectors made my final list. I went another way, however, if I had gone with Minelab, I would have gone with the Manticore, hands down. You've probably read/seen these, but here are some comparisons & reviews. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=equinox+900+vs.+manticore As far as programs (beach, park, gold, etc.) go, they're all just different combinations of the machine's capabilities. You should be able to program the Manticore to do pretty much anything the 900 can do (perhaps some minor exceptions, perhaps some better). Merrill rated the 700/900 slightly higher than Manticore, BUT please (re-)read Merrill's Thoughts on BOTH. The highlighted first paragraph under the Manticore should explain the rating discrepancy. But there's also something to be said for your gut feeling & aesthetics. One may just feel/swing better to you, you may prefer the color screen of the Manticore over the monochrome 900, or as you noted, coil availability. Like yourself, mine is my only detector. I have no regrets, but I don't think I'd have any with the Manticore either. I hope I've helped and not obfuscated things. 🤔

In that case, you probably can't go wrong with either the Dēus II or Nokta Legend. I'd never heard of Rutus until now, but looking them up, some things give me pause... • Warranty is only 2 years. • They don't show a distributor in North America. Who's going to repair it? • They say their detectors are "advanced and innovative" but they are not wireless. • Can't readily find pricing. (Actually, I didn't find any at all.) • I saw some impressive "claims", but no support. Consider the sources of what you're seeing on YT. • I haven't seen any "reviews" but again, I'd consider the sources. I think what bothers me the most is that there's relatively little/no discussion of them (compared to other brands). Why (or why NOT)? If they were as good as the claims, I think more detectorists would be extolling their virtues on every forum as they do with better-known brands. Bottom line, it's your money--your choice.

I'm not familiar with the detectors you're using. Are either capable of notching? I've currently got an issue with some large buried iron masking whatever else may be down there, so I'm going to try notching it out.

Would this be your first detector, or nth, and how would you be using it? I recently got my first detector. Similarly, it also came down to two: Dēus II or Manticore. The sage wisdom I got from Merrill and others who made sense was (paraphrasing), when they're that close, you probably can't go wrong with either. I went with the Dēus II (before Merrill became ambassador), and I have no regrets--I'm loving learning the machine and the hobby. Why? Recommendations from persons whose opinions I respect, and personal choices. Dēus II is the lightest weight detector on the market AFAIK, and I use it with the remote in my pocket, belt, or left hand, making it even lighter. Important with arthritis & back issues. Wireless, IMO, is the way to go; my coil, remote, headphones & pinpointer can all be yards away from each other, not tied down by chords/wires, and still come through the phones. FWIW, Dēus II warranty is 5 yrs.; I believe Nokta Makro Legend warranty is 3 yrs.

What kind of tips? Where are you (generally) and where will you be detecting (beaches, parks, fields, etc.)? I'm making my way through the various programs. Once I have a feel for them and a general feel for the machine, I'll start playing around with custom settings & programs. I'm also getting the feel of the different coils (9" & 13"x11"); once I've picked an area, I go over it first with the 13"--marking signals with flags--then again with the 9" to see if/what I've missed. I'm trying to learn by sound rather than what's on the screen. Most of the time, the screen is either in my pocket or on my belt and I can't see it anyway, and I dig every signal. 🤷‍♂️

I got a Dēus II for Christmas, and I've been gearing up ever since. Am I trying a different type of metal detecting this year? No, I'm trying metal detecting this year (for the first time). 😁 So far, every test run in the yard reveals some new/different item/s to add to the kit!

There must be some info I'm not getting (?) When I search (for example) Amazon for "low latency bluetooth ear buds" I find pages of options all under $100. Searching for "wireless metal detecting earbuds" yields similar results (again, under $100), albeit fewer. In both/either cases, some are rated quite highly, so what am I missing? 🤔

At the risk of mooting a beat horse (or something like that...) in a 6 month old thread... 🙄 I can't opine on which (900 v. Legend) is technologically superior. Fortunately, others have already done that--and far better than I ever could. In addition to Merrill's in-depth analysis here, there's even more on the web now (6 months later). As always, consider sources & motives. Philosophically, I believe in doing one's homework/research, and then investing in the best one can reasonably afford. • Many times in life I have regretted, returned, or discarded a lesser item in favor of a better one. This often resulted in money being wasted on the cheaper option. • Rarely (if ever? 🤔) have I regretted, returned, or discarded a top-of-the-line item/model for a lesser one. Some other (rhetorical) questions/factors to consider (or not): • Will you be keeping the MXT or selling it to help off$et the new machine? • Both the Legend and 900 have been out for a few years now; are you considering used vs. new? (or used Manticore?) • Will this be your only metal detector, or unus e multis? Is one detector worth $400 more than another? IDK. 🤷‍♂️ What, in your mind, would make it worth that extra $400, and does that detector have that? Another option, of course, is to keep swinging the MXT (might even be incentive) until you save up enough to get exactly the machine you want--your Dream Machine (or as close as possible... 😉)

Just a couple of observations from recently getting my own first detector ... IDK if you're just looking at new, or considering used. Anything used won't come with a warranty. This may not matter to some; I look at it as the extra money buys me a little insurance--especially when dealing with something highly technical that I'm new to and don't understand yet. New or used, some of the best advice ever given to me was, "Get the best one you can afford." Lots of people outgrow their first purchases and move up. Not as many say, "This was too advanced--I want to move down." If you can, try before you buy. I see about 9 MD dealers in CO. If they're reputable, they shouldn't steer you wrong because they'll want your continued/repeat business.

Is the metal part definitely lead (or primarily lead)? Can you tell (specifically) what material the white part is? FWIW, doesn't look dental to me.

I did some digging (pun intended) because I'm looking myself. I am now not too sure about the Dr. Otek shovel I mentioned earlier--it got some reviews that gave me pause. In the meantime, I picked one up (18") at Home Despot for $15. I'll probably regret not spending the extra $5 for the 28" version. 😄

I'm RED: Retired--Extremely Docile--in Upstate NY. Metal Detecting was the next item on my "Bucket List", so after a few months of "research" (and putting my Missus through more MD vids than anyone should have to endure), I decided on a Deus 2. The very next day, Merrill made his "Big Announcement". 🤦🏼‍♂️ Timing has never been my long suit. 😏 No idea yet if the Missus will have any interest; we like to do most things together (or at least watch over each others' shoulders). Hoping to involve one or both of our service dogs as well--they LOVE to help. Any MD 🐕s out there? 🤨

It appears the Excalibur was designed for serious underwater (up to 200'/66m) detecting, while the Deus 2 is intended as primarily ground-based, with shallow water capabilities in the range you currently detect. Unless you plan on combining detecting & scuba, I think I'd go with the Deus 2. JMO

Good question. What's your definition of, "not super expensive"? I've got some similar issues with foot pain. FWIW, just in digging around the garden/yard I've learned good footwear can be as effective a wide shovel rim. I find the options out there can be overwhelming, and I've got an abundance of whelm already! 😋 My personal preference is for something with adjustable length and either a "D" or "T" handle (have some arthritis in hands). I'm also wondering... Do serrated edges really matter vs. "sharpened" or smooth edges? Otek? Suggestions? 🤔
